Songjeong beach

Songjeong Beach is in Mijo-Myeon on the southern coast, between Sangju village and Mijo port.  A small village with a resident population of around 150 people, it explodes into life in the summer when thousands of visitors crowd daily onto its 1.5 km beach.

Pine trees line the edge of the sands giving shelter from the sun and a pleasant place to relax and enjoy a picnic on one of the seating areas.  Three shower and toilet blocks are available to visitors and a small campsite is opened up during July and August right on the beach front.  A small outdoor gym has recently been built where it is possible to exercise while gazing out over the South Sea.

The eco-carpark holds up to six hundred cars, shaded by kiwi-fruit trees.  A handful of shops open for the tourist season and temporary food tents offer hot meals and cold beers.   Concession holders offer sun-shades,  rubber rings and dinghies for hire, banana boat and jet-ski rides.

Regular events are held on the beach such as drag net fishing where a fishing boat takes a big net out to sea, the ends held firmly on the shore by two teams of willing volunteers who then haul the net in.  When the word is given, adults and children alike dive into the shallow water to grab whatever fish have been caught in the net.

Outside of the high season in May and June and again in September and October, the weather is still warm and the beach reverts to its tranquil and natural state with only a handful of visitors enjoying the calm beauty of the ocean.   Most facilities are no longer available, but the toilets near the car park remain open and car parking is then free.  The nearest ATM is at Sangju, a five minute drive back down the main road.
