Namhae

About Namhae

The southern boundary of Korea is a sunken coastline which has created an irregular pattern of bays and islands. Located in the middle of the southern coast is Namhae County.

Namhae County is made up of the two main islands plus 1 inhabited and 73 uninhabited smaller islands.  Namhae Bridge runs from Hadong on the mainland to Solcheon Myeon of  Namhae island and  Changsoen-Samchoenpo Bridge runs from Samchoenpo on the mainland to Changsoen island. The two islands are joined by Jijok Bridge.

Namhae is the third largest island in Korea with a population of around 50,000 though only twenty or so are English speaking foreigners.

A popular holiday destination for Koreans, it is largely unspoilt, with  lovely beaches and mountains, historic temples and monuments.

Apart from tourism, the main industries on Namhae are fishing and farming.  It is famous for its garlic and its ancient terraced rice fields.   Outside of the summer season (July and August) it is very much an example of simple and traditional rural life in Korea and a joy to visit at any time of the year.
